Welcome

  • Great design is good for the soul. It is like eating a piece of chocolate or watching a beautiful sunset. It affects us on many levels. In ways that we are not even aware of. It has healing properties. It is my wish to help inspire those around me and in turn inspire myself. I hope that you enjoy my blog. Stephanie Ryan

I'm still here...but I'm tired and cranky.

Picture_12

Picture_9

Well, I'm more tired than cranky. I have some fun news. Drum roll please.......(me making drum roll sound...everyone in my office looking at me like I'm nuts). My stationery company Blue Pumpkin Press will be showing at Surtex next week! Listen, can you hear the crashing of the symbols? (at the end of the drum roll : ) So you are probably wondering...ok, you have a stationery company but your showing at Surtex? This is a very good point. My partner Jessica and I decided a while ago not to show at The Stationery Show. We felt like it was too big of an expensive risk at this point, plus we were getting conflicting opinions from people in the industry and store owners about the benefits of The Stationery Show.
Anyway, about 3 weeks ago I decided on a whim to contact a licensing rep that a friend of mine had just signed with. I went into this phone call with no expectations, just said what the hell let's try it out. The rep wasn't taking on any new artists but she was able to refer me to a friend of hers that also had a booth at Surtex. So, I contacted this new person and I have been a crazed loon ever since. The licensing agency is LW Associates. Libby Wilkie is the rep as well as an artist. She loved our work and agreed to show us at Surtex.
The news of this was so exciting, but the reality of the work that needed to be done was something totally different. Let's start with problem #1. My wide format printer was broken and HP wanted $400.00 to fix it...yup you heard me right. So we made the decision to buy a new printer. FedeX couldn't find my address so I had to drive a half hour to go pick it up. Once I set it up, I needed to color correct EVERYTHING! because I print the stationery designs on my smaller Epson. This was a nightmare, because I got all crazy and flustered. I started playing with my color settings and my monitor display and still couldn't get my colors right....then came the bugs.
My Illustrator program started telling me that I didn't have enough memory and stopped working. Luckily Jessica's husband is a computer genius and discovered that I had a bug. He dumped my preferences and we were back in business. As I am being told I have a bug in my computer, I notice I have a couple bugs flying around my head...I look down at my tablet and there are a few squashed bugs on my drawing pen! I look up and there are thousands of nat's swarming above my head. I called my husband (more like screamed) and he came in looked over the situation and calmly said..."Oh there must have been a hatch" A HATCH ? What the heck is a hatch and what is it doing in my studio?  Anyway, he told me to turn out the lights, go to bed and they would be gone tomorrow. So I did.
The next night after work I entered my studio, cleaned up the dead bugs and tried to figure out why I was having so many issues. I had less than 2 weeks to pull this all together. I started thinking about what my energy was like through all of this. I also started to reflect on my mind chatter. It wasn't good. That little voice in my head was also very hard at work. It was telling me how I wasn't good enough, that I had some nerve thinking that my work could compete with the other way more talented artists and designer showing at Surtex. Then of coarse it went for my horrible self image, all the bad things were laid out on the table. It was winning.
I was so wrapped up in the problems I was having I didn't even notice the abuse my mind was putting me through.
So, I regrouped, gave myself a big hug and softly said "I can do this". The energy shifted, you could feel it move. I got out of the way and let the new energy flow. The printer issue was gone, I reset all of my settings and got a grip on myself and was able to see clearly. Things have been rolling smoothly ever since.
I have been working around the clock for 2 weeks now and am exhausted. Plus, I have my full time job to deal with too.
Basically, I have taken all of our stationery designs and made them into 12x12" squares/repeats. I also designed coordinating pattern, and colorways for the designs and am introducing some new designs that came out of all of this. I believe there are well over 100 patterns. I then took some of those patterns and made product sheets from them. You know... what that design would look like on paper products, linens, scrapbooking, etc. I also am making boards and if I have time I would love to make some mock ups, but I am running out of time. I have to deliver everything on Saturday and the show starts on Sunday. Oh, and I have nothing to wear!!!! I will be there Sunday-Tuesday. Jess and I plan on walking the Stationery Show and will be spending the remainder of our time at the Surtex booth. I would love for you to come and see me if you are at Javits! We will be at booth 910, it is on the second floor of Surtex in the back against the windows. Below is our reps contact information. Wish us luck! I am going into this with good thoughts and no expectations...nothing more. This, or something better, now exists for me, for the highest good of all concerned.

I will try to post some pictures soon and will give a full report after the show.

It's all about being present.

Here is a great quote by Georgia O'Keefe. I am working very hard on being present these days. I read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle years ago, but his new book A New Earth is really inspiring me to live my life in the present. What an amazing feeling it is to live in silence, free from all of that mind chatter. It is so incredibly liberating. It's not easy though, I feel like I am in a constant war with my mind. It gets easier with  practice. Are you awake? Try it.

So Loving:Dill Blossom by SEI

I saw this over at Paper Crave. It is the new Dill Blossom line by SEI. I love the color palette, it is so soothing. I have a thing for muted colors. So, I know it is a major dream of mine to design prints for fabric....this would make me happy too.
Oh, and I just discovered the Paper Crave blog and LOVE it!

Featured Designer: Kelly Simpson

Picture_23

Today I am featuring the work of Dansk designer Kelly Simpson. I am very lucky because I get to work with this very talented woman on a daily basis. Kelly was kind enough to sit down with me for a quick interview. Please also check out her bio, and amazing designs for Dansk.

DH: Can you explain to me your design process?

KS: I LOVE to look online and in magazines to get me excited and get the concepts flowing.  I still sketch with paper  and pencil but also use the computer too.  Many visions that flash through my head of what a design could be and hope to capture some of these on paper!

DH: What do you use for Inspiration?

KS: Anything and everything....patterns, colors, nature, shapes, textures, photos.....

DH: When you are not designing for Dansk what other creative outlets do you have?

KS: I love to do counted cross stitch, my own Christmas and/or greeting cards, and occasional painting for Christmas and Birthday gifts....oh but if I had more space – my own STUDIO space.

DH: If you could be anything, what kind of designer/artist would you be?

KS: A ceramicist/craftsman in my own studio on the beach  :O)  this WILL happen one day.....

DH: What would you consider your design aesthetic to be?

KS: Modern and fun. I also love traditional designs with a twist!

DH:Who inspires you?

KS: Viktor Schreckengost, Eva Zeisel, and YOU!

DH: You are so nice, thank you. It has been a pleasure speaking with you about all of this fun stuff. Your designs are not only amazing but inspiring.

Café Blanc Urban Picnic for Dansk– great for “any meal, anywhere!”, Innovative portable placesetting includes a sectioned plate that accommodates your entrée, drinking glass, porcelain bowl, utensils, bud vase, and individual salt and pepper.  The bamboo tray allows the user to easily transport their entire meal to wherever one may eat!

Picture_25

Urban Picnic Drinks, etc. for Dansk - another innovative way to transport and serve wine for “wine & cheese parties”, linear elements of the bamboo tray crisscross to help glasses stay in place on the tray.  The “semi-stemless” glass size is quite suitable for a good glass of wine.  The combination of glass and light and dark colors of bamboo gives this item a sophisticated look.

Picture_27

Urban Picnic Cheese, etc. for Dansk - great complement to Drinks, etc.  An oval shaped porcelain divided plate has a nice space for crackers and/or grapes.  The removable bamboo board is perfect for slicing and serving cheese.  The tea light globe adds just the right amount of ambiance to the hors d’oves.

Kelly Simpson

Born in North Carolina, and raised among the bluegrass fields of Kentucky, Kelly Simpson had an early affinity for the arts.  Her passion for design emerged after taking art classes at Savannah College of Art and Design's Rising Star Program.
At first aspiring to enter the field of automotive design, Kelly enrolled in the Cleveland Institute of Art.  There, her passion for ceramics led her to engage in an independent study program that combined design and ceramic arts.   Later, a student internship at interDesign in Cleveland gave Kelly the opportunity to try her hand at furniture design as well.  Her design for a small side table proved to be a market success for interDesign; and another testament to Kelly’s design versatility.
In the spring of 2005, just prior to her graduation from C.I.A., Kelly attended the International Home & Housewares Show in Chicago, where she introduced herself to Dansk.  Four months later she joined Dansk as a Product Designer, and quickly proved herself with several dynamic new product launches – the sophisticated earthenware patterns of Coconut Grove, Seacrest, and Crème Brulee; the colorful Ditto glassware and Rio stems; and most recently, the innovative Urban Picnic et al and Karin Organix and Grafix glassware.
Kelly currently lives in Langhorne, PA.  Her designs for Dansk have been consistently featured in HFN Magazine’s coverage of the industry’s most notable new product launches.

Thanks again Kelly!!!

Affirmation

It has been a while since I posted an affirmation. This is one of my favorites by Shakti Gawain. I say it after I make a wish, or do some visualizations, or while I am day dreaming looking up at the stars. Try it! Remember to put all of your positive emotions behind it. Have a great day.

Moore College of Art & Design: 2008 Senior Show

I visited Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia last night to check out their Emerging Artists and Designers Show. Here are some of the highlights.
The show was really great ladies. Sorry I couldn't feature everyone. My camera is horrible and a lot of my pictures didn't turn out. Please feel free to send me portfolio pictures, bio's, and website links. I would be thrilled to feature them here.
My apologies for the poor photo quality. I really need a better camera.

Congratulations: Design for Mankind

Picture_11

My heartfelt congratulations goes out to Erin at Design for Mankind. Erin made the announcement on Monday that she resigned from her "career" job to work on her blog Design for Mankind full time! Wow! What an amazing accomplishment and inspiration to all of us.

Here is an excerpt from Erin's post:

"Design for Mankind has been growing rapidly since August of last year, and holy speed bumps, I have no idea what to do about it. I didn't realize that my passion for inspiring others would soon become a forum for others to do the same, and I am just so BLESSED to have you all along for the ride. THANK YOU, if I don't say it nearly enough.

With that said, you should all know [hold on to your seat, Dad!] that I resigned from my day job last Friday. It's simply too much, and life is too short to burn the candle at both ends. And I would be totally hypocritical if I encouraged each of you to break free from your boundaries and I didn't do the same. Roadmaps has been the dose of medicine that I needed to feed myself, and that has become quite evident in the past month."

Erin's Roadmaps: A Guide to Creative Pursuit series is a collaboration with Holly at Decor8 and Marisa at Creative Thursday. It is an amazing series geared towards helping us to get motivated and break free from our shells and live the lives we want to live. Check it out!

So Inspired: The Art of Lisa Hurwitz

I posted a print by Lisa Hurwitz on Friday and felt guilty all weekend because I only showcased one print. I love her work so much I have to show more. I think one of the reasons why I am loving her art so much is that I used to own a doll that looked like her characters. It had the same shaped head and long thin body and was layered in patterns and stripes. She even had a pair of maryjanes. It burned in a fire that destroyed the building the doll company I used to work for was in. Dolls keep popping into my head....hmmm. Well anyway, enjoy!
Check out her website, Etsy site, and blog.

Goodbye Darkness, Hello Sunshine

I did it! It took all weekend but I was able to move my studio from a dark cold room on the first floor to a nice sunny bedroom upstairs! Many thanks to my hubby Brendan for making this all possible. So here it is, my sweet studio that I am loving so much.....it's like a dream come true.

The house that we are living in is 167 years old and I think the last time it was updated was in the late 40's. The hydrangea and yellow bird wallpaper was added to the house then. I know it is a little busy but I do love it.

I am loving the clothesline shelf thingy that I bought at Ikea. I have all of my stationery designs for Blue Pumpkin Press hanging from there.

P1010085

P1010082_2

I also purchased this drawing table from Ikea, it's great because it has adjustable legs which makes it so much easier to work at.

P1010083

It has been a while since I've played with my sewing machine. The last thing I made were the pillows pictured above, and that was two years ago. I am feeling the urge to try again.

P1010091

It was fun digging my things out of storage. Below are some fabrics that I made at a screen printing class I took, some left over pillows and appliqués I made, and a doll body from the doll company that I used to work for. I miss making dolls...I was thinking of trying my hand at it again.

P1010094

I hope you enjoyed this visit to my studio. I love seeing where people work and create, it always inspires me. So, thanks for visiting and have a great Monday!

A Picture and a Quote: Happy Friday!

I had such an amazing blogging week! Thank you Jan at PoppyTalk and Stacy at Stacy Sews for Links to my blog. I received a lot of hits and was so thrilled to know that I had new visitors to my site. What a great feeling! I love blogging! I highly recommend this to anyone needing a little spark in their lives. You can do it!

I have a busy weekend planned. I am moving my studio from the first floor of our house to a bedroom upstairs. This new room is really special and has a great energy to it. I think that your studio space is a very important thing, you really need to feel good in there to get the creative juices flowing. I can't wait to post pictures next week. I hope you have a great weekend and would like to leave you with this great quote by Georgia O'Keefe and this wonderful print by Lisa Hurwitz.

Sneak Peek: New Design from Blue Pumpkin Press

Time to debut another new design from Blue Pumpkin Press! I have to say that I love designing stationery, I have been having so much fun with it. This new design is called Poppies. I hope you like it!

Inspiration: Color

I am loving this color palette. Coral, pink and lavender together are so sweet, but add a dash of grey and taupe and it becomes a soothing treat. Be careful....don't add lacquer furniture, you may send yourself through a time warp back to the 80's! Remember the days of grey and mauve!

NY Tabletop Show

I attended the NY Tabletop Show at 41 Madison on Friday. I thought the show was great and will be posting some pictures soon of it. Lenox's showroom looked amazing with new additions to their very successful Simply Fine line, and the new Kate Spade Transitional and Holiday patterns are amazing. I will reveal the pictures after their press release.

One really fun surprise from the show was seeing Amy Butler's new pattern Vintage Botanica for Mikasa.I wish I could have gotten into their showroom to see more of it. These photo's are the best I could do.
